The concept was to upgrade a typical suburban home's outdoor space from a drab concrete patio and lawn, into a showcase space that is adaptable to multiple entertaining needs throughout all four seasons.
The challenge of the project was incorporating the clients wishes (large patio spaces, outdoor kitchen, outdoor fireplace, shade structures, lawn, and a future pool location), all with their property's limited space.
In order to accomplish these wishes, I developed a layout that joined many different outdoor rooms in a cohesive manner that allows each space to be utilized independently for day-to-day family use, or as one, in the event of a large social function.
My concept was to link the different outdoor rooms to one large covered patio space. The main covered patio has a vaulted tongue-and-groove ceiling and is flanked on one side by the outdoor grilling station. Anchored on its far side is a masonry fireplace that extends through the roof. The eye can then carry out toward the horizon where a lower patio is nestled on the back side of the fireplace and shields its users from the sun with a pergola that is integrated into the roof. Adjacent to these spaces is the main sun patio. This space's architecture is defined by the cascading steps one walks down to enter the space on one edge, and a graceful masonry seating wall and columns on the other. Perimeter plantings on the property lines help to establish the lawn as its own outdoor room and discourage the user from focusing on the neighboring homes.
The space provides the client with an extension of their interior spaces, outside. With the different exposures (full sun, partially shaded, and shaded), the homeowner is able to take advantage of all of St. Louis' ever-changing seasons.
